Academic writing - From a first draft to the final version

Date(s)

20 October 20259:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Please note that on 20th lunch break will be from 12:00-13:15 due to another booking of this room

Target audience

PhD-candidates of VDSEE and VDS-CoBeNe who want to improve a manuscript draft

Goals

The focus of this workshop will be on the process of drafting, starting with a rough first draft of a publication, we will go through the steps of the revision process, which involves several types of editing, and hopefully leads to an accepted final version of the text, ready for publication.

Content

This workshop covers the revision phase of the writing process. A major challenge for the revision process is, to shift from the perspective of an author to that of a reader- and back again. Therefore, we will first analyse the expectations of the paper’s audience, peer reviewers as well as the readers of the dedicated journal. Based on this we will focus on a recommendable sequence of different revision and editing strategies to more efficiently finalize your text. We will clarify our arguments, smooth the text structure and clear up linguistic garbage in our texts piece by piece. You will engage in peer feedback and incorporate the feedback you receive into your draft.

Methods

Within these two days, you will work on your paper drafts and apply the strategies discussed to improve the text, no matter at what state your draft is at the beginning. Therefore, there is no point in attending without a draft. However, the text may be a very rough "shitty first draft".
