Research data management is becoming increasingly important in all stages of the research data life cycle. There are lots of exciting workshops and training courses available! Highlights in the coming summer semester include the workshops Introduction to Research Data Management in Social Sciences and Research Data Management in the Humanities.

Ask a librarian - Consultation Hour

The consultation hour is an advisory service for all students, regardless of their level of knowledge. In an open and friendly atmosphere, support is available on all topics relating to literature searches and literature management. From research strategy and choosing the right database to the sensible use of AI research tools, all questions are welcome.

Get to know your library

Would you like to get to know the university library on site? The Get to know your library series introduces you to the different library locations and shows how to make the most of their services for your studies or work. You will learn how to find and borrow materials, discover available services and study spaces, and explore what makes each branch library unique. These sessions offer practical insights into using the library on site – from learning areas and service points to special collections.

Would you like to use the library's services and resources effectively? In the courses focusing on "Library Basics", you will learn how to use u:search, the central search portal, to access a wide range of books, journals, and digital resources. You will learn how to apply for a library card and how to order and borrow materials. In addition, you will receive information about the library's various locations and learning spaces, as well as contact details and advisory services.

Would you like to learn how to efficiently search for scientific papers, articles, and other relevant sources? Would you like to be able to critically evaluate scientific sources and assess their quality?
The courses on literature research impart the knowledge and skills necessary for efficiently searching for, evaluating, and obtaining scientific information. The diverse range of courses on offer extends from introductions to research techniques, search engines, catalogs, and databases to in-depth subject-specific courses.

The courses on reference management provide both foundational and advanced skills for working with reference management tools. You will learn how to import, manage, and cite literature correctly while streamlining your research workflow.

The "AI Literacy series" introduces the basics of language models, effective prompting, and AI‑based literature search tools. You will learn how different tools work, their advantages and limitations, and how to use them responsibly. The courses also show how to choose the right tool for your topic, prepare search strategies with AI, and apply the results effectively in the library catalog.

Specialised Library Knowledge

Would you like to discover the university library from new perspectives? The "Library Special Knowledge series" offers insights into special collections, historical holdings, and other unique areas of the library.
These courses highlight how libraries preserve, curate, and provide access to rare materials. You will learn what treasures are hidden in the stacks, how historical collections are maintained, and how special collections support research and teaching.

The Vienna University Library supports research through a broad range of services and infrastructures. The seven teams of the Research and Publication Services department accompany the entire research cycle – from research data management to the publication, documentation, and visibility of results. The portfolio includes consultation, training, and operational support on research data management, open access, research information, publication strategies, and digital methods – including digital humanities and citizen science, helping you make the most of the library’s infrastructure and work more efficiently.
