Leadership at the University of Vienna encompasses a wide range of roles – from leading a scientific research group for the first time to managing administrative units (DLEs), from professors to the heads of study service centers (SSCs). Excellence in research, teaching, and administration is largely the result of strong teams. Strong teams are shaped by strong leaders who guide people and topics with competence and the necessary self-reflection. Leaders bear the responsibility not only to implement the university's strategic direction but also to actively shape it through inspiring and responsible actions.

For individuals with leadership responsibilities in academia or administration, a selection of trainings on relevant leadership topics is available, designed to support you in the competent execution of your leadership tasks. Take a look at the full range of support available for leaders.

Managers and supervisors have a special responsibility when dealing with sexual harassment. The e-learning, which focuses on the duty of care and your options for action, is now available on u:rise.

A guideline for the work context, a checklist and explanatory videos also support you in responding to incidents in an informed, attentive and sensitive manner and preventing them in your team.

LeadershipLab

Applications for the Leadership Lab 2026/27 are now closed. The key elements of the two-semester programme in German include a two-day kick-off in October 2026, monthly facilitated online small-group meetings and selected online intensive workshops, a two-day ‘mid-term review’, and a one-day closing conference. An overview of the detailed programme is available on the FührungsLab intranet page.

LexA in Research

The Career Center of the Ludwig Boltzmann Society has been actively supporting researchers in Austria for years in developing and advancing essential leadership competencies. The Leadership Excellence Award in Research (LExA) specifically honors individuals who not only demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities but also serve as role models and sources of inspiration for early-career researchers.

The nomination process was completed in May. The selection process will be carried out by an expert panel this summer. The awards ceremony for the winners will take place in September 2026 at LBG XChange.

Peer Exchange on Work-Life Balance

Each stage of life is marked by different priorities, whether they involve family obligations and caregiving, health, volunteer work or leisure time, as well as third mission, mobility stays or leave of absence for research and teaching purposes.The peer exchange focuses on the balance between work and other areas of life within your teams, as well as on your own work-life balance challenges.

Legal Matters

The Human Resources Legal Affairs Office provides direct contacts for employment and personnel-related legal matters.

Administration

The HR Generalists are points of contact for employees and managers, and they independently handle all tasks related to the administrative processing of HR procedures. These processes include, for example, setting up employment contracts, maintaining personnel files, and managing entry and exit processes.

Conflict Counselling

The Conflict Resolution Counselling Office provides support in finding solutions for challenging interpersonal situations within a professional context.

Leadership Coaching

Managers are supported by the Talent Development team through external individual and team coaching, as needed. The goals include strengthening leadership skills, improving overall work-life balance and job satisfaction, and building resilience.

Team Development

The University of Vienna welcomes strategic development initiatives. These include retreats, team-building activities with external facilitators, and organisational development measures within a defined target group.

Working together safely

For professional and safe collaboration and studying, the University of Vienna offers a range of advisory and training services, such as on topics of security, accessibility, and sexual harassment.
